The Samsung Galaxy S7 will join the USB Type-C party

The Samsung Galaxy S7 will join the USB Type-C party

When USB Type-C tipped up in the new MacBook earlier this year, it raised quite a few eyebrows – but the next-generation standard for ports and cables is quickly going mainstream, and it's not surprising that the next-generation wave of smartphones are all including it.

That wave of smartphones includes next year's rumoured Samsung Galaxy S7, if a report from SamMobile is to be believed: the site says "sources" are tipping the S7 to drop microUSB for USB Type-C.

Most of us would have predicted this was in Samsung's plans anyway, but the new report makes it almost certain. No doubt you'll get a brand new USB Type-C cable to use with your existing USB equipment included in the box.

Type-C-ing is believing

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are two of the first smartphones to come with USB Type-C (support for the standard arrives in Android with the Marshmallow update). The technology is also present and correct in the OnePlus 2 as well.

The updated standard offers faster data transfer, faster charging, a plug that you can insert either way up (at last) and the option to use the same cable for two jobs at once – so you could charge up your smartphone while sending video to a large monitor, for example.

Nothing's confirmed until Samsung says so, but it looks like you'll be able to charge your Galaxy S7 from a MacBook, the latest Chromebook Pixel and all the other laptops likely to support the standard in the coming months. In the meantime, here's everything we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy S7.
